THE TUSCAN COUNTRYSIDE

Siete contenti di tornare indietro di qualche settimana? …se siete d’accordo voglio farvi vedere dove sono stata mentre ero in Italia!

Are you happy to go back a few weeks? …if yes, I’d like to show you where I went while I was still in Italy!

Quando torno in Italia, non posso mai fare a meno di visitare, tra gli altri amici anche i mitici Osvaldo e Mirella. Durante l’estate lasciano Prato e si spostano sulle montagne intorno, dove hanno una casetta in una fattoria. In questo modo fuggono al caldo della città, per godersi il fresco e il loro orto.

When I go back to Italia I can’t miss greeting, among other friends, the great Osvaldo and Mirella. During summer they leave Prato and go on the mountains around, where they’ve got a small house in a farm. In this way they escape from the hot air in the city, to enjoy the fresh air and their vegetable garden.

Se guardate bene in questa foto qua sotto si può vedere una città nella valle in fondo. Là c’è Prato, la città dove sono nata e cresciuta!!

If you look well at the picture here below you can see a city in the valley at the bottom. That is Prato, the city where I was born and grown!!

Osvaldo e Mirella sono instancabili e tutti i giorni, si fanno una passeggiata nei boschi intorno alla loro casa..per tenersi in allenamento! E così abbiamo fatto anche quel giorno!

Osvaldo and Mirella are untiring and everyday, they walk in the woods around their house…to keep in shape! So we did that day I went to visit them!

Hanno un orto enorme! …e anche qualche coniglietto (ma non voglio pensare cosa ne fanno!). E’ faticoso seguire tutto quest’orto..ma loro, sorridenti come sempre, non possono farne a meno, e raccolgono poi contenti i loro frutti…che poi regalano spesso anche ad amici e vicini di casa!

They’ve got an enormous vegetable garden! …and some rabbits too (but I don’t want to think what they do with their rabbits!). It’s really tiring growing a vegetable garden so big…but they smile, as always, and they couldn’t live without it. Then they harvest happily their fruits…and give often them as presents to friends and neighbors!

Alcuni di questi pomodori vengono da semi che io e John abbiamo regalato loro! Ne vanno molto fieri, e a quanto pare sono molto apprezzati da tutti! Osvaldo ha raccolto apposta per noi alcuni pomodorini gialli, prima che i vicini di casa li mangiassero, per farceli assaggiare!

Some of these tomatoes are grown from the seeds that John and I gave them as a present! They’re really proud of the, and it seems that these tomatoes are really appreciated from everybody. Osvaldo harvested some yellow tomatoes before the neighbors ate them, to make us taste them!

Annaffiano mattina e sera. Mirella si siede su una seggiolina e “dirige la canna”, Osvaldo cammina lentamente lungo ogni solco e annaffia bene tutte le piante! …quanta pazienza!

They water them morning and evening. Mirella sits on a chair and “guides the hose”, Osvaldo walks slowly along every ridge and waters every plants! …what a patience!

E come sempre, la giornata si conclude in bellezza con un pò di cibo genuino e campagnolo! La Mirella frigge i fiori delle zucchine appena raccolti. Affettiamo prosciutto, salame, finocchiona, pane toscano. Abbiamo olio dei loro olivi, insalata, pomodori e cetrioli presi dall’orto! ..cosa c’è di meglio di una cena in compagnia di buoni amici?

And as every time, the day went out with a bang, with some country and natural food! Mirella fried courgettes’ flowers she just harvested. We cut ham, salame, finocchiona, tuscan bread. We’ve got Olive oil made from their olives, salad, tomatoes, cucumbers from their vegetable garden! …what is there more wonderful than having a dinner with your good friends?
